IEC 60320 Connector Guide (IEC-320)

Identify common appliance connectors and their matching equipment inlets. Often called IEC-320 connectors, these connections are covered by the IEC 60320 series.

Connector or inlet?

The cable-end connector normally has recessed female contacts. The matching appliance inlet on the equipment has pins. For example, a C13 cable connector mates with a C14 equipment inlet. Check the moulded identification and product drawing rather than relying on a nickname.

Common connector pairs

Cable connector / equipment inlet Identification IEC current Maximum pin temperature Equipment class
C5 / C6 Three-lobed “cloverleaf”; includes earth 2.5 A 70°C I
C7 / C8 “Figure-of-eight”; no earth 2.5 A 70°C II
C13 / C14 Three-contact rectangular profile; includes earth 10 A 70°C I
C15 / C16 Hot-condition pair; keyed/notched profile 10 A 120°C I
C15A / C16A Very-hot-condition pair; additional keying 10 A 155°C I
C17 / C18 Two-contact relative of C13/C14; no earth 10 A 70°C II
C19 / C20 Larger three-contact pair; includes earth 16 A 70°C I

These are reference ratings for the connector types, not a rating for every finished lead. Pin temperature describes the permitted temperature at the inlet pins; it is not the allowable ambient temperature of the cable or the whole assembly.

IEC and North American ratings

Connector IEC reference North American example, where specifically approved
C13 10 A / 250 V AC 15 A / 125 or 250 V AC
C15 10 A / 250 V AC 15 A / 250 V AC
C19 16 A / 250 V AC 20 A / 125 or 250 V AC

A North American approval does not automatically increase the permitted IEC rating. Read the actual product markings and certification. A complete lead may have a lower rating because of its plug, cable, fuse or other components.

Choosing the right lead

  1. Identify the equipment inlet and its exact connector code.
  2. Check voltage, required current and the destination-country plug.
  3. Match the temperature category and protective-earth requirements.
  4. Check the complete assembly rating and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Class I equipment uses protective earthing; Class II equipment uses double or reinforced insulation. Never remove an earth connection or alter connector keying to make a lead fit.

The term “kettle lead” is often used loosely. A C13 lead is a cold-condition connector and must not be substituted where a hot-condition C15 or another specified connector is required.

Less common connections

For older, specialised or unfamiliar couplers, send us a clear photograph, the equipment model and any moulded markings. We will help identify the connection before recommending a replacement.

Standards and product information

The IEC 60320 series covers appliance couplers. IEC 60320-3 covers standard sheets and gauges and is read alongside IEC 60320-1.

For the rating and approvals of a particular MCC lead or connector, check the information and any datasheet provided on its product page. If you need a datasheet or confirmation of suitability, contact MCC Power Solutions with the product details and intended application.
